Pork In The Blood.

I went for a blood donation in school yesterday.

Eevon
and Yoong Kang were there as well but they refused to donate, since all three of us were not eligible because Yoong Kang's gay and both Eevon and I are bi they were scared of the big needle.

As you all know, pork is a big no no for the Muslims here. Not even food cooked by Chinese pots and pans since these stuffs were once in contact with pork.

So, I wonder what about our blood? Since >90% of the population of Monash are Chinese. And I had bah kut teh for lunch just before that donation.

While taking my blood pressure,

GP: Are you well today?

mk: Yeah!

GP: Have you eaten?

mk: Yeap

GP: What you had for lunch?

mk: Err.. *paused for a moment* rice.

(I was so tempted to just say bah kut teh, rice with pork!)

darah babi! oink! haha, funny, non-halal blood! Will they actually tell you that you can't donate? I wonder.

Maybe they would label my blood packet as "untuk Cina sahaja". Haha!!

The same goes for Malay and Indian donors. Since no beef allowed for Hindus and some Buddhist that prays to Kuan Yin.

And what about vegans? omg. They'll bleed to death since MOST donors are omnivores (even some are carnivores, yum yum). Haha!!

heay -- I told my family bout this whole thing yday over dinner, they also went "Yeahor".

And to my amazement, mom said, "Yeala! Cannot one what. Our blood different one, cannot simply transfuse. The Malays will get back Malays' blood"

And I went, "Nolar mom, we only recognize blood type. There's no such thing as Indian blood, Chinese blood, Malay blood. And there won't be donor's identification what's race is he and all on the blood"

Mom continued, "But gong gong (grandpa) said his body was all so itchy after the blood transfusion that day and the doctor told him it was an Indian blood"

*everyone LOL*

"no such thing la, mom. You should come study science with us. hahahahahah"

mayc -- Interesting uh? To be truthful, there won't be pork in the blood la. It was just a random thought.

The Malays will not eat food cooked by Chinese pots and pans not because these food have pork but because the pots and pans were once in contact with pork. It's unclean. The reason for this is because, according to their religious beliefs, swines are unclean animals, and if we consume it, it will defile us. We'll be unclean ourselves. Hence, these blood are actually unclean?

As far as it's concern in Medicine, there will only be complication in the blood when a different blood type was transfused because our body will reject any foreign stuffs. Our blood has this receptor what it calls as antigen on the surface of the blood. Only the matching antibodies will match these antigens --- just like keys and locks. I bet you know all these.

To cut the short story long (I know its lame), whatever we consumed (bah kut teh for example) will undergo digestion and the final "form" of this bak kut teh where the nutrients will be absorb would be amino acids (meat) and also lipid (fats as well). These amino acids will be absorbed in the small intestines and circulated in the blood.

So, what's in my blood was amino acids and glucose (rice leh?) and not pork itself. But in terms of "unclean" in religious view, then yes la.. =)

Wow!! Never thought about it. Good title too!

Ok, so after all the avoidance (can I say abstinence as well =P) of pork and painstakingly making sure that everything that looks halal IS halal for both utensils and food, the unhalal elements get transfused DIRECTLY into their veins? Oh my..!!
