Today in Pharmaco lab, we had hands-on studies about the effects of certain drugs on inflammation.

I thought it was quite cool.

Each group was provided 3 white mice. One as control, one was treated with paracetamol (same effect as Panadol) and another treated with a drug known as Indomethacin (a type of anti-histamine).



Notice the mouse pointed with arrow? That mouse was treated with Indomethacin and guess the dosage was a little too high. He seems inactive, do nothing and just lie down quietly throughout
the practical.



We literally injected 0.1mL of egg albumin (an allergen that causes inflammation) into the left foot of every mouse



And then we measure the diameter of the mouse's left foot every hour to see the effect -- how each drug helps to lessen the inflammation.

For example, to see the effect of paracetamol (Panadol) in reducing our inflammation (fever or other pain).

Theoretically, the control mouse's left foot would swell while other mouse's foot would swell (inflame) but the swelling would decrease with time. However, the mouse treated with Indothemacin (mouse with pointed arrow above) passed away after an hour (and Amelia thought its cute and funny. Ugh) due to overdose of drug.

Take home message -- Please take your drugs (painkiller) when you're in pain and they will help to decrease it but please don't overdose yourself. Consult your pharmacist or medical officer before any drugs consumption okay =)
